They seem to behave a lot like Java fern for me. That means they like
slightly harder water and/or a bit of salt. They don't seem to require high
light, but mine don't grow very fast either. YMMV.

The algae implies you need faster growing plants (Hygrophila, water sprite,
etc.) in the tank to use up the nutrients (particularly phosphates in fish
food) before the algae use it. [Bolbitis ain't it!] Also, the light period
should be close to 50%, which aids higher plants and limits algae growth
rate (algae don't need a dark "respiration" period like vascular plants do).
That's *my* best guess.
