Aloha all,
been finding more stuff about astaxanthin. I think it is possible to over
do it and it may be detrimental to fish. Talking to one of my frinds here
who raises killies found that it if fed to fish too often they would bloat.
I recall something similar happening to my P. connieae. I suspect that
this may have been what wiped out all of my connieae. It seem as if the
fish end up with a kidney failure and just ballon up and die. Sent them
off for testing for mycobacteriosis and they came back negative. Anyone
palying witt this stuff might want to be careful if you have special fish.
I suspect that a little in the diet every few days should be OK, and
different species may have different levels of tolerance (never a problem
with the P. furcatus and yes they are nice orange, yellow, and in extream
cases orange/red fin tips).
Right now suspecting that the fish are producing some kind of metabolite
in excess that causes the kidneys to get overworked, ultimately leading to
their failure (sort of like diabetes if untreated)
