I think Gary has been spot on.

I am surprised though that Larry has not noticed the changes in behaviour
in his fish that usually go with these 2 problems i.e. territorial
aggression and parasite infestation.

Your friend may not have given you a sick fish Larry, simply the stress of
the changes could have suppressed his immunocompetence and activated
dormant parasite spores.

A quarantine tank is always a good hedge against just such an episode.
Lucky you didn't add the new fish just before you went on vacation. You
can't simply rely on gadgets like UV sterilizers to cope with anything that
might come along.

Is my photo still on the tank ?
