Apparently ALL species of Pomacea are technically 'Apple Snails' regardless
of their size or colour. However, usually the name 'Apple Snail' is used for
the large, usually brownish species such as Pomacea maculata or for the
Florida (US) native species Pomacea paludosa. The smaller and brighter
coloured Pomacea bridgesi (the species most common in the aquarium hobby) is
usually called the Mystery Snail. All Pomacea species are herbivores and may
well consume aquatic plants if not regular fed some other diet.
