Hi all,

As far as I know, the so-called Koi virus is a herpes-related virus. It is extremely contagious and like many viruses, it probably has the ability to mutate very quickly and might then jump across species barriers. I agree that it would be a disaster of first order of magnitude if such a virus not only wept out the carp, but also native fish.

I think that trying to fight an introduced organism with another introduced organism does not work. In different conditions, it is just not possible to predict how organisms will behave or develop. There are several examples of how exactly this type of "solution" made things worse, especially in Australia. Weren't foxes introduced in Oz to eradicate the rabbits?? But as far as I know, they did not eat the rabbits but rather all the smaller and slower marsupials..

Everyone would agree that it would be a VERY bad idea to introduce Sumatra tigers to the Northern Territory to fight the feral South Asian water buffaloes, right? In essence, this would not be different.

Cheers

Christophe

Is this anything like Carp Pox? Sorry, but I am not "up" on all the diseases
carp get.

However, I DO know that carp pox can be spread to other fish in an aquarium,
since I have seen large plecos succumb to it. If plecs can get it, then I
would think other species can, too. Scary to relaese this into the wild
where we know even less about what our natives can and can't contract. :-(
