Using terrestrial plants or aquatic plants as nutrient removers requires one
more ingredient: light!
So before you start sticking plants or their roots into your aquarium or
trickle filter chamber, make sure you have lots of light for them.
The rule of thumb on the aquatic plant digest (mailing list) is 2-4 watts
per gallon for aquatics (I know, I know, woefully inadequate for the
scientific mind - but it's simple and it works). For terrestrials, like
tomatoes, all I can say is - the more the better.
