Hi Steve, well, I hope you're subscribed to the mailing list, just in case
you aren't, I cc'ed it to you anyhow ;)
Basically there is a fair demand for Rainbows in the aquarium trade. Most
of the folks on this list are hobbyists, with the occasional commercial
type and scientist thrown in :)
Here in Oz we breed basically all our own New Guinea Rainbowfish, as they
are prohibited imports.
Commercial methods of production vary, you'd be better off talking to the
experts about that - can someone provide Steve with the fish-farmer's
federation or whatever they are called these days? Mr Sambel?
The export position is interesting - not sure when we will be able to
directly import fish from PNG. Or whether fishfarmers in PNG can export to
the really big markets, the USA and Europe. Someone else know? We hear a
lot of stuff on the list about the poor general quality of Rainbowfish in
the US market (which is being addressed by some folks there who are working
hard to breed decent fish).
While fishfarming is said to be a bloody lot of hard work I am sure it is
something that many of us have considered at one stage or another. Best
