I have personally seen a group of diners eagerly devouring "fresh" lobster
tail dipped in Soy Sauce and Wasabi while the impaled head of the donor
looked on from the centre of the platter with legs waving in approval/agony
depending on one's point of view and I must say it didn't do much for my
appetite. I can say that the effect on my companion was dramatic - and the
change was from initially compliant to the very opposite. In fact she was
unable to continue to even sit in the restaurant so we had to leave and a
long discussion followed on why I didn't march over to the table of 10
"black-belted oriental savages" and whip their delicacy away from them and
disappear into the sunset to find a site where I could end the unfortunate
animals distress.
When I suggested that in this age of equality etc that it would have been
so much more dramatic and effective if she had done so given the intensity
of her feelings and so on the direction of her became zeroed in on me and
a lively dialogue ensued. Fortunately the end of the evening was less
adversarial but she did make a formal complaint to the RSPCA and was told
that legislation was being developed.
Sorry about the distraction, but we do have to think about the way we treat
our animals and also the way we are seen or perceived by others to be
treating our animals and that definitely includes fish and other aquatic
organisms.
