I'm not the in depth Aquarists that some of you folks are
but it surprizes me to read that many of you often neglect
the basics of fish keeping and then are suddenly confronted
with problems!
I've experienced the "DISEASE" and early on tried to battle
it. With little or no luck. I've been lucky or diligent with
my BASIC care and have had no occurrences lately. My current
treatment for Ulcer disease is : spawn and destroy. Better
to lose one or two than a whole whack of fishes. I've
totally dispensed with additives (except chlorine remover
when changing water in fry tanks)and medications are a thing
of the past. I spend more of my money now on fish and
concentrate on doing more and larger water changes. FOR ME-
this has proven a more successful ,cheaper and less
frustrating way of dealing with this problem.As Harro has
written many "fish drugs" make wrongful claims and are just
downright dangerous.Don't be complacent!
I think a move back to basics i.e. fewer fish per tank ( no
one likes to hear that one;-) ), good foods and frequent
water changes should all but eliminate UD. I can not recall
an occurrence of this problem in any of my tanks that were
lightly loaded with fish.
