I think it's a bit of a waste of time and money, myself, if you are doing
regular water changes.

Again, to vastly oversimplify, whatever bad wastes are in the water, if fish
put it in, water changes take it out... this includes ammonia, nitrites,
nitrates, phosphates, urea, and pheromones. The stress being on the "if the
fish put it in".
