In managing captive populations do we track individuals or do we
track populations? Should this approach change depending upon the
species and/or their husbandry and breeding requirements?

SPARKS (Single Population Analysis and Records Keeping System) is
the studbook database system in general use by the American Zoo and
Aquarium Association. However the Lake Victoria SSP (Species
Survival Plan), despite being an AZA affiliated program, uses SIMS
(Species Inventory Management System). Another model is CERCI, a
colony management system, which has also been proposed for use in
the management of fishes.

This is something the ACN is trying to come to terms with in the
management of captive fish populations. We haven't yet studied
these models in any depth. I would be grateful to hear the views of
people on ACN-L concerning the proper database management of
captive populations of fishes for conservation.
