1. Do Cane Toad eggs kill Rainbows? I awoke this morning to find
quite a few dead M.duboulayi floating amongst a large mass of Cane
Toad eggs and plant roots. I have had no problems with fish in this
pond in the past, so I am amusing it was the Cane Toads. I am
guessing the fish ate the eggs. It seems to be only the adults and
large fry that were killed. Alot of small fry still swimming about.
So that would suggest they were to small to eat the eggs? A thorough
clean of the pond to remove all the Cane Toad eggs turned up a
rather large body count of about 20-30 duboulayi. The pond is now
toad free and remaining fish seem ok.
2. I have a small tank that housed 4 R.ornatus. 2 died during the
week, the other 2 have swollen red mouths that appear to have
growths. The inside of one fish's mouth appears to be very red. I am
thinking it is baterical? This tank has 30% weekly water changes,
all 4 had been going well for several months. I treated with Broad
Spectrum Medication lastnight. Hasn't seemed to made much
difference. Water tests as follows;
pH - 7.2 (Abit high for ornatus?)
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 10ppm
Temperature - 24c (76f)
I am thinking the best treatment would be a Melafix and Pimafix?
3. I have not been able to cure a disease on a P.tenellus. It
appears as white blotchy patches over the body. Mainly behind the
head. Looks more like the skin has come away rather then a fungas
growing on the skin. I have treated it with a week of
Melafix/Pimafix, then tried Broad Spectrum Medication and later
tried Protozin. It tends to clear up after a treatment then flares
back up. No idea what this is. The fish seems healthy and happy
otherwise. The water is changed weekly. Water tests as follows;
pH - 7.2
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 5ppm
Temperature - 24c (76f)
4. I have 38 litre tank of P.gertrudae. 6 had been going well for
several months. Last fortnight they have been dropping off one by
one. No symtoms at all. Water is changed 30% weekly.Water tests as
follows;
pH - 7.0
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 5ppm
KH - 5 (89.5)
GH - 9 (161.1)
Temperature - 28c (82f)
No idea why they are dying. Tank is lightly planted. Maybe they need
more cover?
Sorry for the all the questions! Hope I am not spaming the mailing
list! I had no problems for with any of my tanks for several months,
then it all seems to go wrong at once! I am still fairly new and I'm
trying to read all I can and keep my tanks well maintained. I am
doing weekly water changes. So any help and advice I can get will be
much appreciated! :)
Thanks,
Conway
