We use Bristlenose cat fish.
If you get a pair (he has a beard, she doesn't) and a nice place for them to get under then they will also breed.

We have magnets, but only use them to measure - water change, fish length, etc. Magnets & other abrasives will scrath especially if you manage to grab a bit of gravel.

Subject: [RML] Algae problems

Hi there everyone

Are there any effective means to get algae from off the walls of an
aquarium without scratching up the glass and poisoning my fish?  I have
some new tanks and I do not want to scratch the sides of the glass.
They are heavily planted and algae is a constant problem.  I have been
away for 3 weeks and have come back to an onslaught of algae.

Someone told me to use a credit card and scrap it along the walls - but
somehow it causes scratches.  Ages ago I used one of those green 'Scotch
Guard' things and found that it leaves scatches over time, so I have
stopped using them as well.  What do you experts do if you have the
problem??

Most of the stuff I saw in NY city was total crap. Take the time and go down to Rosario LaCorte's place in Jersey. He still has the nice reddish boesemani from the first shipment that hit the states in '84 and they still look like the originals, just like the LaCorte tetras that he collected some 20 years ago. You keep pulling crap out of the sewer and then asking for it to be identified. Go buy the quality material and then you won't have to wonder, you'll probably get it a lot cheaper too. You mentioned brooklynites so I'm guessing that you mean the Brooklyn Aquarium Society and not some other "rogue" organization :-) Nice group of aquarists with a broad range of experience. They seemed to have mastered many of the other fish so with a little bit of training they shouldn't have too much difficulity mastering the bows. I would bet that some are doing quite nicely with the bows and they probably know their names too :-) I dropped off quite a few eggs and some fish there about 2 years ago so if you querry the better members I'll bet you'll still find some stock floating around in your BAP program. We also have a few members of the RSG in your group look them up and take a look at the fish & egg listing (shipped to members only though so you'll have to join). If you are looking for an uncrossed fish that is your best way to find it. It's a shame but that's what (most) of the wholesalers have done to the bows in the US. cheers, Gary Lange gwlange at STLNET.com Rainbowfish Study Group of North America http://home.stlnet.com/~gwlange/rainbowfish.index.html ---------- > From: Piabinha at aol.com > To: rainbowfish at pcug.org.au > Subject: [RML] auratus? > Date: Saturday, October 10, 1998 10:31 AM > > last night, at our local club, there were 2 bags of baby 'bows labeled > "auratus." they were too small for me to identify them, and totally > colorless. they were clearly some kind of Melanotaenia. the person who bred > them told me that was the "trade name" and described the adults as bluish- > green body with black tipped fins. > > sorry if i can't be more precise (mislabelling is common at our club, being a > bunch of brooklynites, what do you expect? most guys have never heard of the > linnean system...) but i wonder if anyone can figure out what they could be? > i have not yet heard of auratus. > > tsuh yang chen, nyc
