No, I never would have thought it was a prank. I've heard similar
stories from people using reef products around HID and fluorescent
lights.
I don't have a good explaination for it. My best guess is that the
fixtures or ballasts in the vicinity are not properly earthed. The way
I've heard the story told, you actually have to get some of the product
on your finger as your are pouring it into the tank, and that the lights
need to be on to observe this effect.
