I think, IMHO, that crosses and untrue species/strains are not a bad thing
from a retail point of view... UNLESS they are not labled for what they
are. As long as they are not passed off as "true" representatives of any
rainbow species, then I see no harm in them. In fact, the reason I see no
harm in them is because I agree w/ the point you made that a real rainbow
fan will seek out "good" stock to breed once they find out more about the
fish and what they *should* be about. Also, I know that 98% - 99.5% of
fish keepers do not actually perpetuate the fish they have... unless
they've got guppies or mollies or Mbuna or something like that. ;) So
the vast majority of retail fish will not be spawned... and crosses,
thatnkfully, do not tend to be fertile anyhow.
I think your questions were valid, and I applaud your efforts to find out
all you could about the fish *first*. I wish more folks would do that. :)
