If you got orange lumpy stuff, the brine shrimp hatched and died. They only
live a few hours if too crowded, too warm and lack sufficient aeration. To
adequately harvest them, under your temperature, light, etc. conditions, you
must determine the optimum time. In my brine shrimp hatchery at ~85oF they
hatch in less than 24 hours and can be harvested between 20-36 hours before
dying. If you want to slow the process down, lower the temperature, but below
75oF the hatch success is reduced. If you expect to be away during the
harvesting time, you can use about 1/4 the amount of cysts and they will live
longer. I use about one teaspoonful of cysts in 2 liters of salt water (2
tablespoonsful of solar salt) normally. I hatch them to feed both killifish
and rainbow fry. Smaller fry cannot eat them for a while and must have
smaller food - rotifers, paramecia, microworms, etc.
