Yes, you are preaching to the converted here!

My point was that they don't feed as vigorously as some other fish
that I have kept them with. I have never had the resources to keep
them on their own.
I think your comments about colour and variability should be
considered together. Some fish, in particular those from my local
creek have very intense colour on the primary dorsal fin, a bright
red to rival my brightest Empire Gudgeons. The primary dorsal fin
also develops long filaments in large males. The other fins get a
wash of red and the ventral surface goes a (short lived) blood red.
Naturally many fish never attain these colours. Perhaps there is a
species complex of Philypnodon sp...
