Whew! Maybe I should burn my house down too, just to make sure! :)

Ok, what about this: get rid of the fish in the tank, then use the
"algae-ridding" routine that's worked for some people whose tanks had green
hair and blue-green algae on the plants list, ie using a hydrogen peroxide
solution and doing a water change?

I know that pathogens in nature have "reservoirs," like rabies in
kanger...er... racoons. Anyone know what the reservoir for this bacterium
is? If it was fish, then you could remove all fish from the tank and wait a
while...
