I recently repaired a leaky 55 gallon tank. I used the re-silicon the
entire inside method (except the top rim). Admittedly, you will have to
break down your tank to do this, but, you will have a much better chance
of success at plugging the leak. I think your odds of having a
successful repair if you replace only the silicon where you suspect the
leak to be, are no better than 50/50.
Seems to me no sense to even make the attempt if you don't plan to have
a high probability of success.
