I don't know if this will help clear things up or not. Could they become any
muddier?;-) So here goes: To quote from the Field Guide To The Freshwater Fishes
Of New Guinea by G.R. ALLEN, page 89, under the description of Lake Terbera
Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi)...."; colour largely yellow
(sometimes greenish on back) with bluish-black midlateral stripe: dorsal, anal,
and caudal fins yellow to red."

Based on this description I would say that Herbies can have red fins or not!
Look through all the Herbie photos you can find and you'll see that some have
more or less red in the fins than others.

If you're out there collecting and in your net you find two fish, and one has
more pronounced red fins and overall more vivid colour than the other, which one
are you going to keep? The less colourful fish is an equal representative of
it's species even though you threw it back!

Ps. after keeping both Herbies and Trifasciatas including Running Crk (Gary
Lange) I can't believe it is possible to confuse the two. Never did these fish
even look remotely similar in colour! Pappan (I'm the "a" school;-) ) crks
maybe. Looking at photos perhaps but to mistakenly cross these very different
fish? I doubt it. Their body shapes are so different that one could not help but
notice the differences even after brief observations.
