I was in a shop in Bethnal Green (London) yesterday and saw some rainbows in
a tank, they were unlabeled, but there was a scrawl off M.Aff on the label.
I asked the shop owner and we said he wasn't sure, as someone "who knows his
rainbows" said they were M. carae or carii or something like that, given the
way he pronounced maccullochi it could be almost anything beginning with c.
I succumbed and bought a couple on spec they looked healthy and weren't
expensive.
I suspect that they are affinis, especially as that is what they were sort
of labeled as, they are a bit small to be fully coloured, but the male shows
a distinct red line above and below the lateral line, exactly like the
pictures on the CD and in Allens book. However, I have a vague memory of
seeing something about a new rainbow called something like M. Carae, and
wondered if there was such a fish and if so, is there any possibility that
I've got a pair.
won't be disappointed if they are affinis, as I didn't have any.
