I have seen the same happen with a goldfish. Its mouth was "stuck" open and it couldnt eat. it gradually got skinnier and skinnier and then died. After examining the deat fish it appeared to have some sort of swelling, possibly a tumour in the lower th

roat area inside the gill region. The period of time from the mouth being open to death was about 6 weeks.
