This is one of the new big issues here in Honolulu. At the University of
Hawaii researchers have been working on using commercial aquaculture feeds
to raise ornamentals. Typically there is a greatly increased growth
response. these feeds are typically about 20 % lipid/fat. One of the
questions raised is if this "unnatural diet" would have concequences, i.e.
reduced viability, reduced fecundity, reduced life span. The researchers
said they did not know, that work has not been done. The feeling from the
opposition says it is bad news. But the researchers have been saying that
there is no "published experimentation" to demonstrate the negative effects
of a high fat diet or what consititutes a "natural diet". Maybe we need to
set up a controled experiment, replicate it, etc. The researchers are
asking us hobbiests for fish to do the research. All I have are M.
bosmani, I think an OZ species like M. splendida M. trifasciata, for
reasons of the affects of the rainy/dry seasons, may be the best to see
easily demonstrated consequences. Only problem is I don't have room for
either trifasciata or splendida. My wife said I could have 3 species of
Pseudomugils in addition to the M. bosmani. Somehow I got four species by
recently aquiring P. mellis (Snapper Creek).
