Although alien species introduction is a concern, by far especially for
invertebrates like crayfish the pollution and other environmental poisons
introduced are a vastly larger threat. Crayfish are especially sensitive to
water condition and contaminants. That's why I'm rather proud (silly as it
may seem to some) to have raised Roger, our late crayfish, to the ripe old
age of 7 years. Along with the concern of introducing alien species, we
should be more concerned or at least as concerned about what goes down the
drain and leaches into our groundwater. For example everyone knows not to
pour oil down the sewer drains, etc. but have you ever thought about how much
the total oil from cars that have slow oil drip leaks add up to. It's
estimated that 1 gallon of oil contaminates a million gallons of water, as a
heath threat to us such as increased cancer risks, possibly 10 times that.
Unfortunately on this forum I know I'm preaching to the choir. Hope
everyone had a good weekend.
