Thanks for the tip on Reef blocks - it seems like almost any source will do but it may be that cost, availability, habit etc may flavour the choice rather than more "scientific" criteria such as dissociation/ionisation qualities which would be more impor
tant for the purpose?
It is obvious that this topic should be re-aired from time to time
to see if "new blood" can add new ideas.

BTW I am happy with Peter's levels for defining soft, medium and hard water. I guess he wanted people to "bite" on his statement << My
reasons for suggesting this is that in the Oz wilds "typical" aquatic
habitats are probably in the moderate zone which would be what most
species typically experience>>
He is fully aware that several species e.g. M. mccullochii, R. ornatus, I. werneri, M. nigrans, M. exquisita, most forms of M trifasciata etc are almost exclusively found in "soft" water.
