I doubt you will get any pseudomugils to cross with melanotaeniids. I
recently met a commercial rainbow breeder from Texas who has played around
with hybrids a lot. He said he's only found one hybrid combination to be
fertile (I forget which species) and it sounded like he'd tried quite a
few. One Melbourne fishkeeper supposedly crossed Bedotia with Melanotaenia.
> Also in the wild how often are hybrids found?
Hybrids are fairly rare and don't seem to have any day to day influence on the
purity of the species involved. For the most part I think there is a fair bit
of habitat separation where they are sympatric, especially in the cases of
maccullochi and nigrans. Not sure what stops trifasciata and splendidas.
Make an interesting behavioural study for someone to do. Imagine your day job
being snorkling in warm creeks observing rainbowfishes spawning up on Cape
York or somewhere similar!
