Can injected CO2 deplete Ca or Mg? Or in water without much buffering capacity, can it deplete the carbonate anion? Some of the local plant keepers recommended I add some baking soda since I don't get the pearling I would like to see after a few days, even when I increase the CO2 to bring my pH down to about 6.7.

I have some ugly green hair algae (I've never seen this shade of green before; it's like a florescent olive green) that I got when I let my tank stay empty for a couple of weeks. Thankfully the new growth is coming in algae-free.
