horny rainbows at night

I have noticed that the rainbows I have extend and "show off" all there
fins during the night when there are no lights in the room or the tank.
The borders of the fins are darkened and their movement seems more of a
gliding action, "flashing" and showing no sign of rest. By early morning
their fins are still extended and their behaviour seems to be that of
breeding. What do they do at night? how can they see or "communicate" with
each other? (I can see them when the red heater light turns on) And is the
extending of fins have anything to do with sleep/resting or is it purely
breeding conditioning? Are there any ways to photograph them at night
without a flash?
