If I was serious about breeding a particular Rainbowfish I'd only obtain it
from someone who knew exactly where it came from...
>Should you prevent "brothers" breeding with "sisters" how can you make sure
>the pair, trio or group is unrelated yet viable?
Good question, one I have asked myself quite often - (in relation to fish,
that is!).
>What is the RSG, ANGFA
>and others position on setting up and maintaning a registration system?
>(Only "top" specimens, such as collected spieces, may need to be
>registered)
Good luck, Cyrus ;). Yes, it is a terrific idea, but no-one has figured out
how to do it yet.
>Are there any direct actions to establish some types of rainbows in the
>aquarium industry? Are there any well established and cheap rainbows
>(guppy-style) in Europe, US, Australia?
There are Rainbows in the "trade" - I'll let the more knowledgeable members
of the list detail them (de-tail them?) for you.
The closest thing to the "guppy" or common-as-goldfish may well become the
Neon Rainbow, Melanotaenia praecox) - if present trends continue there
should be several million of them in the hobby by the turn of the century
:-). Seriously, if they are as breedable as everyone keeps saying, and
someone develops a strain that looks acceptable to the average mug aquarist
under normal aquarium-shop lighting, they could well become the commonest
Rainbow in captivity. This scares me a bit - what happens to them when the
"fad" moves on to something else, and who will look after the "ugly fish" in
the meantime?
