I haven't ever had Purple-spots from a "Location" so I don't even know what
species they were but perhaps they were suffering from a lack of prey items
rather than directly from the temperature. Certainly there are some
populations still present in coldish areas of the Murray-Darling Basin so
there must be strains that are cold tolerant.
