Originally I saw an account ( from the Nancy Aquarium I think) where they
had set-up their Peacock Gudgeon display with vertical bamboo canes with a
hole drilled in each "cell" and the fish had colonised these "apartments"
and were breeding freely in them.
I tried PVC vertically but mine seemed to prefer horizontal. I agree with
Adrian - just big enough seems to make them feel more secure. I even found
that they seemed to prefer broken bits of flowerpot forming a shallow cave
rather than a full pot but the PVC is easy to use for an artificial hatching
setup.
I only use water pipe PVC.
