dear julie,

it sounds to me that the rainbowfishes with orange markings might be M.
parkinsonii. these are gorgeous rainbows, with lots of orange on the
body, near the posterior fins. check out a book or the web sites to
compare your fish.

i'm new to the list too but my impression from scouring petshops in nyc
is that there are no hybrids in the hobby. mostly, what you see are
several varieties of M. splendida and M. macculochii, the more common
ones, then you might find M. boesemannii (tebera rainbow), Glossolepis
incisus (red irian rainbow), M. lacustris (turquoise rainbow), etc.
