Catch the fish, kill it (take your pick how, probably not in formaldehyde
as the fish can die with extended gills and plus it stinks when you pull
it out), while the fins and body are still soft place the fish on a board
with the desired background colour, pin out the fish (like you would an
insect) so that all the fins are straight and extended. Paint the fish
with formaldehyde, let dry (this hardens the fins so they don't move)
remove the pins, take the photo. BTW: formaldehyde does not preserve
colour or help it even persist as far as I am aware. I remember being
told that Hamar Midgley had some really nasty chemical that he used to
put them into and they would show the most brilliant colours and die very
quickly. Then you can get a colourful photo. :-) Anyone who tries to
take photos of rainbows and get them in focus (forget colour) has either
or both too much time and money to waste. Get a goby. They just sit
there, you have time to focus and adjust so that it is just right and one
click and you have an excellent slide. None of this one good picture per
roll of film crap. :-)
