I'm afraif you purchased a crossbreeding. The fish come only from Lake
Sentani where they are endemic and don't show colour varieties other
than depending on food and tanks (more or less read, deepbodied, etc.).
It also shouldn't be a birth defect. Unfortunately many (indeed most)
rainbowfish crossbred and produce hybrids, which nevertheless only in
few cases are fertile.
