I agree with you 100 % Peter

Your summary is superb - the reason I raised the question again was because
some time has passed and others have joined the list who may have something
to add.I am involved in discussions with DPI Fisheries at the moment trying
to legitimise the keeping and breeding of of the species from PNG that we
now have in the hobby. Also soon the subject of legal importation of PNG
species is due for consideration at a Federal level.

Some members of the list will be pleased to hear that my latest advice from
the department looks like being favourable ;-)

However as you pointed out Peter, that does not absolve us from any
responsibility towards the environment and our own native species and it is
important that we increase our efforts to support a "best practice code"
for outside keeping of ANY fish, including those species native to that
particular catchment. Remember there can still be some disease risks to the
environment from diseases acquired in captivity e.g. from dealer's holding
tanks. Even if we catch the fish ourselves it is unlikely that we will put
them in pre-sterilized bare tanks by themselves and any other situation
could add other pathogens to those carried by the fish destined to escape
from the flooded outside pond.

The vexed issue of proper safeguards for outside ponds is one that we could
fruitfully pursue on this list now!

Regards,
Bruce.

PS The fact that they are "banned Species" has hardly stopped the arrival
of numerous species to these shore to date and won't in the future ;-)
