I believe that it is very easy to treat 'fish keepers disease' these days as
long as it is diagnosed properly. In my research on this side of the
mycobacteria story I found a couple of early cases here in Oz where
amputation of fingers was implemented to stop the infection.

But I still did all my water changing using a mouth syphon - I guess old
habits die hard :-)
