You think WE'RE strange - I actually spent 4 weeks in America last year and

You are right - Aussie Rules is probably better known as "Rafferty's Rules".
One thing we don't do though is claim "World" Championship status in sports
where the competetion does not include any other country - except your
"Kiwi-equivalent" near-northern neighbour :-))
"Real" football over here is Rugby League or as it is usually called LEAGUE
as opposed to Rugby Union which is often shortened to UNION, "Rugby", Rah
Rah etc. I understand League developed in Britain as a sort of working man's
streamlined version of Rugby which was played in the "posh" private schools
and is considered to be a game "suitable to be played by gentlemen".
BTW Brazil rarely seemed to get out of first gear the whole series - they
deserved to lose but I'm not sure that France would have won if every team
had to play every other team in the first round. :-(
