They are FW fish but come from lowlands areas and all the places I have
collected them from have hard alkaline water so adding some salt and/or
Tanganyika type salts such as are used for Rift Lake Cichlids would help. I
recommend a generous amount of coral or shell grit in the substrate to
ensure good buffering. Remember they grow to about 12 inches eventually and
although not vicious will swallow anything small enough to fit in their
rather capacious mouth. Also they are really schooling fish like all
Ambassids so try to keep at least 3 or 5 or more in a group so they can
behave more instinctively. BTW nobody has bred them in captivity to my
knowledge so you can make history ;-)

The other in the group are egg scatterers in plants and tend to spawn over
several days but fry are tiny and need APR type of initial food. I would be
interested in hearing where your fish were caught.

You might be able to still get a copy of the book from ANGFA of North
America by contacting Brian Lang at BLang1234 at aol.com or try JIm Forshey at
