The mysterious marine microbe Pfiesteria may have been =
lurking in Australian waters for some time.=20
A bizarre shape-shifting marine micro-organism that has been =
devastating fish stocks in the US has now been identified in Tasmanian =
waters.

But scientists are unsure whether it poses a similar threat to the =
islands's multi-million dollar Atlantic salmon industry.

Tests last week confirmed that the organism, found by CSIRO Marine =
Research, is the dinoflagellate Pfiesteria shumwayae, which has been =
creating havoc in waters off North Carolina in the United States for =
several years.

It was discovered during routine monitoring of water and sediments =
in the Huon Estuary, south of Hobart, and in the woodchip export port of =
Triabunna on Tasmania's east coast. The Huon Estuary is the home of the =
state's Atlantic salmon industry, worth $120 million dollars per year.

According to CSIRO phtyoplankton specialist, Dr Peter Thompson, =
this the first positive identification of Pfiesteria's presence in =
Australia.=20

Until now there have not been techniques to positively identify =
the organism. Pfiesteria is difficult to identify because it has more =
than 24 different forms, constantly changing shape depending on its =
environment. The team has had to send samples to the US for DNA testing =
in high-containment laboratories.

However, Dr Thompson said it is possible the organism can live in =
local waters without creating problems. Earlier this year the same =
species was discovered in New Zealand, and to date, no problems have =
emerged.

"We are hoping it will be a non-event", he said.

It is likely that the Pfiesteria found so far in Australia is in =
its non-toxic form, he believes. The toxic form, which attacks the skin =
of fish, tends to occur in environments where the nutrient level is =
high.=20

Scientists consider that Pfiesteria may even be native to local =
waters. "There have been reports of organisms like this being found in =
Tasmanian waters since 1995, and there was one reported finding in NSW =
as far back as 1975," said Dr Thompson.

"It is important to establish if the organism occurs naturally or =
if it has been introduced," explains Dr Thompson. He and other =
researchers will begin compiling an Australia-wide shortlist of areas at =
risk for Pfiesteria outbreaks, which they hope will be completed by the =
end of the year.

Vulnerable areas tend to be brackish estuaries with high nutrient =
levels and a water temperature under 30 degrees Celsius.

If Pfiesteria is found all over the country it is likely to be a =
naturally occurring species. However a concentration of populations in a =
small number of areas would indicate the organism has been introduced - =
through ballast water in ships, for example. If this is the case, =
measures can be put into place to contain the contamination.

Dr Thompson believes Pfiesteria does not pose a threat to humans. =
Unlike other dinoflagellates, its toxins do not accumulate in fish, and =
thus don't travel up the food chain.=20

However, the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Water, =
and Environment recommends avoiding contact with fish and water if =
significant numbers of fish are dead or show signs of disease such as =
lesions.
