One thing I have found with a planted tank I have created at work, the
deeper the gravel the better. I am growing things such as Tiger Lotus
(green) Cypts, and QLD lace (apponogeton)
aswell as a variety of cutting plants in gravel (no latereite, peat etc)
that is 4 " deep with no problems at all.

I have tried this with lesser depths of gravel and have failed miserably...
