Dave-

I can confirm your account of rainbowfish affinity for filamentous algae
through my own tank observations. I have observed bows actively working the
hair algae after being introduced into an established plant tank. In a few
days the algae is trimmed back considerably.

I collect wild rainbowfish here in the NT and have done so for many years.
I am mainly concerned with Melanoteania australis,M.splendida inornata
M.solata, M.exquisita, M.nigrans, M.pygmaea, M.trifasciata, M.gracilis,
M.exquisita, Pseudomugil gertrudae, P.tenellus and P.cyanodorsalis. I have
noticed the first faeces of the rainbowfish from wild places is mostly
compressed dark green filament algae. I don't know if it is the algae they
eat for algae sake or the other organisms that are associated with the
algae. From those obs I have always fed my fish food that is or has a big
percentage of vegetable material. The fish in the ponds here always have
algae available to them. The cyclops in the ponds are either ignored or
eaten last because there are always plenty of cyclops even when there are
high populations of fish. The cyclops do not appear to be a major item in
the food of the rainbowfish I have here. Maybe they eat them when they
cant get anything else. A good prepared fish food recipe would be 25% fish
fillet, 25% whole prawns or shrimp and 50% peas/zuccinni.spinach/carrot all
blended together and supplemented 50 grams/kilo with calcium ascorbate.
Rainbowfish are also interested in small insects that end up on the surface
of the water. The blue-eyes tend to eat less algae than rainbowfish.
