I am currently in the beginning stages of a research project
investigating the efficacy and feasibility of incorporating data
generated by commercial fishermen into government fishery management
plans. Many fisheries (both in the U.S. and abroad) currently require
that industry fishermen keep logbooks of their trips...this information
is often used to supplement fishery-independent data such as trawl
surveys. I am interested in specific fisheries in which this is taking
place. Some nations including Australia, New Zealand and Canada are far
more sophisticated in this area than others. New Zealand and Australia
in particular require that industry members help defray the cost of stock
assessment and management by contributing a certain percentage of the
money earned from their catch to research organizations. Again, if
anyone knows of specific instances of this occurring in these and other
countries, please contact me. Precedents, citations or points of
contact would all be greatly appreciated.
