I have had the honour and pleasure to know whale researcher Aleaxandra =
Morton for a good many years now. She is one of the most selfless women =
of distinction working to protect ocean creatures living on the coast =
today. I urge you to read her urgent plea -- and act. Please use the =
email addresses below her letter to send a message to B.C. politicians =
to desist from siting (or relocating) any more farms in one of B.C.'s =
recreational & biological gems -- the Broughton Archipelago. It's time =
to say NO! to the death and disease wrought on wild waters and species =
by marine-sited netcage fish farms. (Please Circulate) -- Howard Breen / =

Hello From the Broughton Archipelago:
=20
For the past 13 years I have watched the degradation of a bountiful =
archipelago where I have been living and studying whales. =20
=20
Salmon farms moved in here in 1987 and since then toxic algae blooms =
have become annual events, Atlantic salmon covered in sores are in =
Pacific streams, killer whales were displaced for many years due to the =
acoustic harassment devices on farms, previously unheard of epidemics =
now plague the wild salmon enhancement facility, sludge has buried =
prime prawn habitat, populations of wild salmon and their prey have =
plummeted and the community of humans is so low our school is threatened =
with closure. In a word the effect of salmon farming has been =
disastrous.
=20
Through the concerted efforts of many individuals and organizations we =
were able to inspire a moratorium, but that has been lifted and today =
the government is considering the request of salmon farmers to place =
even more farms in this ecosystem which is already approaching collapse.
=20
As is customary, there will be a chance for the public to respond to =
these new salmon farm sites, but I have attended many of these meetings =
over the years and not one has been productive. =20
=20

The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 16th in a small town at the north =
end of Vancouver Island called Port McNeill at the Haida-Way Inn. I =
know many of you may be half a globe away, but I would like to ask a =
favour. Could anyone who is knowledgeable about the impact of salmon =
farms in coastal fjord-type environments please email the BC Cabinet =
(below) and the key MLAs in the opposition benches?
=20
I don't know how many places on earth can be destroyed by corporate =
activity before we are no longer a viable species, but my sense is that =
we are close to that number now.
=20
Thank you for your consideration,
=20
Alexandra Morton
