Subject: Friends of Trashed Rivers III Conference

My name is Robert Cole and I=92m writing on behalf of Friends of the Chicag=
o
River (FOCR) and the Coalition to Restore Urban Waters (CRUW.)

FOCR will be hosting CRUW=92s third annual "Friends of Trashed Rivers"
conference at North Park College located on the north branch of the Chicago
River in Chicago, IL USA from May 16 through May 18, 1996.
We would like this conference to be widely attended so as to better reflect
the diversity of the people and organizations working on issues relating to
river, stream and wetlands restoration. Scholarships are available to assi=
st
those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Hundreds of people have already registered for this event. However, we are
currently trying to identify those individuals and organizations in your ar=
ea
that are not yet represented. Please review the list below and respond wit=
h
any contacts that would appear appropriate:

Local environmental groups
Community-based Organizations
Church groups working on environmental concerns
River-related recreation groups =96 fishing or paddling clubs, etc.
Environmental justice organizations
Native American organizations working on water issues
Schools with environmental curricula
Strange visionaries who wander the local "trashed river" picking up garbage

Here is a short quip to describe the event:

"Interested in the fate of an urban river, stream, or wetland?
You don=92t have to be a lone voice in the urban wilderness! Join hundreds=
of
others who dare to care about trashed rivers! Come to Friends of Trashed
Rivers III. Who else will be there? Citizens, volunteers, government
agencies, forest and park districts, regulatory and planning officials,
community organizers, teachers, engineers, developers, environmental, and
civic groups =96 all the people who need to work together to restore urban
waterways," FOCR.

I have plenty of brochures providing a more extensive overview of the
conference including details of the multitude of activities planned for th=
e
conference. A sample of a couple of the plenary events is below:

=B7 Environmental Justice on Waterways
Dr. Gustav Jackson, East of the River Community Development
Association

=B7 Don=92t Do This!!! -- Restoration Bloopers
Oprah meets restoration. We all learn by trial and error! Listen t=
o
the confessions of the experts on =20
their most embarrassing cases of learning the hard way.

Here=92s a few examples of the many hands-on workshops, classes, and
discussions that will be available:

=B7 Growing an Organization: 501(c)3 or bust!
How do you take your group form all Voltaire to staffed? Do you ne=
ed
a 501(c)3? What issues are =20
involved?

=B7 Water Quality Monitoring in an Urban Setting
Try your hand at water quality monitoring. You can try monitoring =
a
riffle and a deep water site. =20
Volunteers will show you how it=92s done.

=B7 Restoration Alternatives and Methods
Learn about alternatives to channelization and concrete. Learn more
about daylighting creeks and =20
using rocks, wood, plants, and conservation corps labor to make
cost-effective, ecologically beneficial=20
restoration projects.
