Kathie Adare asked for a common name for Cerastoderma edule. According to The
Encyclopedia of Shells (1991, Kenneth R. Wye), it is known as the Common
European Cockle. It is described as "A medium-sized shell, oval in shape, and
has solid thickened valves. There are numerous low and closely set radial ribs
on which are very small concentricaly laid scaly spines. The exterior is
usually off-white to beige; the interior is white, with a little brownish gray
staining on the posterior muscle scar."
