It's been interesting reading the introductions of others -- and it's obviously
an interesting group. Now's my turn.

I'm Peter Hollings. I grew up in the coastal "Lowcountry" of South Carolina in
Charleston. Much of my time was spent on the coast which is characterized by
barrier islands, an incredible network of tidal estuaries and several major
river systems. I gravitated to this environment and had numerous fresh and salt
aquaria, collected specimens, etc. It became a lifelong interest. College took
me to Rice Univ. in Houston and then I did got the equivalent of an MBA at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I tried to translate my business
training into a aquatic career but there were very limited opportunities in the
1970's. So I ended up in management consulting in Boston and later Manhattan
(primarily with information technology within the financial sector -- pretty dry
stuff, you might say).

I've moved back to the Southeast where I'm trying to apply my management
consulting background within aquatic settings, specifically aquaculture. Of
necessity, aquaculture is growing rapidly because we've overharvested the
oceans. It's also a relatively immature industry and sound management and
environmental practices are frequently lacking. There are examples to
demonstrate that conducting aquaculture in environmentally sustainable ways is
in the self interest of producers as well as society at large.

As I work with aquaculture I'm interested in the issues that the Aquatic
Conservation Network deals with. Maybe if aquaculture becomes an issue (which
is not unlikely) I can give something back by sharing the perspective that my
contact with aquaculture gives me.
