The Sacramento Bee recently published an in-depth investigation of the
environmental decline of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). This special
report is now available on a Worldwide Web site
(http://www.nando.net/sacbee/dyingsea/).

Bee Executive Editor Gregory Favre says about the series: "How can you
destroy one of the great natural wonders of the world? The question alone is
enough to frighten some of us. The fact that it is being done should terrify all of
us.

"'A Dying Sea,' a six-part special report first published December 10-13, 1995,
chronicles the hard truth about the destruction of the Sea of Cortez. This is not
fiction, or a story in a scientific journal, or a conservation group crying for help.

"Pulitzer Prize-winning Bee reporter Tom Knudson, along with photographers
José Luis Villegas and Erhardt Krause, traveled more than 6,000 miles,
interviewed more than 140 people on both sides of the border and took
numerous trips on the sea itself for this series.

"The culprits are many and they are powerful. The defenders are few and are
much weaker. And even if you never visit the Sea of Cortez, you ought to be
concerned. If something this biologically rich can be killed, then there is little on
our planet that cannot be plundered."
