At least insofar as US native fishes are concerned, the government agencies
responsible for their protection are working on taxpayers' behalves.
Therefore, it is reasonable to ask to what extent they have the resources
to be successful in their jobs, where the shortfalls are, what hobbyists
can do to provide temporary relief (certainly acceptable on a "better than
nothing" basis, at the least), and to help the agencies to fight for
adequate resources in the future.

Another potentially productive route is to be in touch with John Shute, the
AZA Conservation Office, and others who have been active as professionals
in native fish conservation, to both pressure them to work more
aggressively with state and federal governments where necessary (though I
can't believe that John could do much more), and to again, help these
organizations to garner the necessary resources to be more effective.
