Hybrids in cichlids (an other fish) are not too much unusual even in
the wild. In rivers in Mexico is not very much uncommon to find
hybrids of two sympatrical species, even species which have very few
things in common, like for instance Herichthys carpintis and
"Cichlasoma" labridens, and I am not talking about the H. carpintis
invader of Medialuna spring, but those natural populations in lower
Rio Panuco.
Under captive populations in ponds I have observed the extreme
situation of a pair with fry between a Throrichthys meeki female and
a "Cichlasoma" bartoni male.
Hybrids between two dissimil Cyprinodons in Cuatro Cienegas de
Carranza (Cyprinodon bifasciatus and Cyprinodon atrorus are common
where the populations get together). But those species are separated
by habitat preferences normally.
Hybrids in the wild are not very numerous though.
