BUT FIRST -- QUOTABLE QUOTES:

"Progress depends very largely on the encouragement of variety. Whatever
tends to standardize the community, to establish fixed and rigid modes of
thought, tends to fossilize society . . . . It is the ferment of ideas, the
clash of disagreeing judgements, the privilege of the individual to develop
his own thoughts and shape his own character, that makes progress possible."
--Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933, 30th President of the United States.

"Keep your line always cast. In the stream where you least expect
it, there will be fish."
--Ovid

ESA COVENANT: Members of Congress who are trying to gut the ESA are
"deeply disturbed by the prospect of religious values entering the [ESA]
debate," Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt told a recent conference on
religion and the environment in Boston, citing denominational statements
in support of the ESA. Babbitt said that if these legislators "truly
listened to the Creator's instructions to be responsible stewards, then
their entire framework of human rationalizations for tearing apart the
Act comes to naught." Babbitt said that God "did not specify that Noah
should limit the ark to two charismatic species, two good for hunting,
two that might provide some cure down the road, and, say, two that draw
crowds to the city zoo."

"The environment used to be a bi-partisan issue. For a few it still is.
But the
modern Republican nominating process has now come to be controlled by a
coalition of groups that includes extremist organizations, some of which are
financed by large polluters. They have attained a disproportionate influence
over the modern Republican party. Of course, some Democrats see political
advantages in that contrast. But I don't really because the disadvantages to
the country of losing this bi-partisan coalition are so devastating to our
ability to continue making progress in cleaning up the environment."
-- VP Albert Gore, New Hampshire speech 1/27/96

"Technology is of no use to us if it is used without
respect for the earth and its processes."
-- Aldo Leopold
